Maricel Pamintuan grew up in Brunei, a South-east Asian nation located on the island of Borneo, where lush forests are abundant and the air sings of tranquillity. Since the age of 3, she has shown a keen attentiveness to drawing and this interest in the arts led her to experiment with various pathways of the creative medium throughout her teenage years such as piano, dance and painting.
Her first exposure to designing garments was during one of the many dance performances that she had partaken as a teenager. She took delight in selecting materials and embellishments for each specific dancer and worked closely with a tailor in bringing her sketches to life despite having no formal fashion design training at the time.
Although that remained memorable, she chose to pursue architecture as a university student to make full use of her educational training in both science and art. While studying architecture in the United Kingdom, she was exposed to various fashion magazines and through this, she discovered the craftsmanship and storytelling side of fashion design through haute couture. She realized that her passion is toward a more hands-on, storytelling approach to creating and thus, decided to follow her heart’s calling.
During her time as a fashion design student, she took up a summer internship at Marchesa in New York in 2012 where beading, embellishments and fine materials have since influenced her design preference. After graduating from Winchester School of Art, United Kingdom, in 2013 with a first class honours in BA Fashion Design, her designs have since then been published in notable publications such as Vogue & L’Officiel and showcased at runway presentations such as Telstra Perth Fashion Festival and Mercedes Benz Asia Fashion Week.
